U: “Under the Sea” Adventures

Janelle has always been particularly fond of dolphins and other sea creatures, and so we’ve found our way to aquariums quite often. Here are a few of our favorite (and not so favorite) experiences:

  1. Miami Seaquarium – Miami, Florida – We saw how “Flipper” the dolphin was trained, and watched trained dolphins perform all sorts of fun tricks. There was also an excellent restaurant on site with a huge seawater aquarium which was the centerpiece of the dining room. It was here that I tried coconut shrimp for the first time, and what can I say? I’m still obsessed with coconut shrimp!
  1. The Aquarium Pyramid at Moody Gardens – Galveston, Texas – Along with a beautiful assortment of underwater life, guests get to walk through an underwater tunnel which travels beneath the 1.5 million gallon aquarium. Sharks and other fish soar overhead, making it a memorable experience.
  1. SeaWorld – San Antonio, Texas – The park itself is a wonderful experience, which offers everything from trained orca whales to a trapeze artist who works with a host of trained tropical birds. We planned this visit intending to swim with the dolphins, but missed our appointment by a few minutes and weren’t allowed to do it. This was devastating, but we still enjoyed the trip.
  1. SeaLife Aquarium – Grapevine, Texas – This was the smallest of the aquariums we visited, but we were still able to see over 5,000 sea creatures and walk through an underwater shark tunnel, all within the historic Grapevine Mills Shopping Mall!

Each time I visit the ocean or witness the raw power of sea creatures such as Great White Sharks, I am reminded of the fierce power of the sea. Many men have faced its raging swells, and several have not lived to tell the tale.

The Bible reminds us that God controls the raging sea (Amos 5:8; Psalm 74:13; Job 26:12). What an awesome demonstration of His sovereignty and mighty power!

It’s also quite a comfort to know that if Jesus could calm the ocean’s mighty waves, then He is certainly capable of bringing peace into the stormy situations we each face in our lives (Mark 4:35-41).

It’s time to trust Him to steer us through life’s rising tides… He has things perfectly under control.

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”

Isaiah 26:3

  1. When we lived in Monterey, California, we often visited the aquarium there. It’s one of the best in the nation, known for its amazing research along the Monterey Bay. My boys were so young that they don’t remember our Monterey Aquarium trips, though at the time they loved the penguins. My favorite place to stop was the room with the jelly fish … I could have gazed at those creatures forever.
